For those of us who are or have been emotionally abused, we know how the experience insidiously sabotages our self-esteem. We know how easy it can be to falter, to begin to feel the familiar self-doubt and fear. We need to be reminded that the abuse is not our fault. We need to find the motivation to trust our perceptions — and find the courage to change our present reality.

So you’ve fallen and think you can’t get up! Is it the job you hate but need in order to pay the rent? Is it that relationship that you gave your all to only to end up with a broken heart…again? Perhaps it’s your children, a family member or a lifelong friend doing you in, dragging you down, pushing you to the brink. If you are an honorary member of the Black Woman’s Suffering Society, you have probably been told that it’s all your fault. Or that struggling and suffering is your lot in life.

    This book is brilliant…, April 15, 1999
This review is from: Encouragements for the Emotionally Abused Woman: Wisdom and Hope for Women at Any Stage of Emotional Abuse Recovery (Paperback)

I went looking for a simple book to read as an introduction into the process of healing from emotional abuse. I found this book and it changed my life. Filled with quotes, brief yet poignant advice and bold-faced affirmations, this book made so many things clear and helped me to sort out a lot of my confusion. I learned as much from this book as I gained comfort from it.

I have one recommendation to anyone who reads it: while you are making your way through the book make a note of the affirmations that really touch you. When you’re done, go back and copy those affirmations on index cards and place them where you can read them each day. I copied at least twenty. My favorite one is “You deserve calmness and tranquility in your life. You’ve already been through enough storms.”

Exactly what every recovering woman needs to hear, April 12, 2005

This review is from: Encouragements for the Emotionally Abused Woman: Wisdom and Hope for Women at Any Stage of Emotional Abuse Recovery (Paperback)

Do you have one of those friends who is always able to tell you exactly what you need to hear when you go to her for help? This book is for those of us who don’t.
Full of common sense, encouragement, and beautiful truth, each one-page entry is a perfect bite-sized dose of the advice our mothers never gave us. Each page starts with a relevant quote from diverse sources such as Dickensen, Shakespeare, Sartre, and Oprah. Then a few paragraphs of reassurace and information on all aspects emotional abuse recovery from recognizing abuse, leaving (or staying), to recovering and making sure you break the cycle of abuse.
The gentle “encouragements” style of this book is extremely helpful for those of us facing trauma so great that we are almost too frightened to face it. This book won’t make you weed through seemingly endless, depressing, distressing chapters on disorders and case studies that don’t seem to have anything to do with you.
This book should be in the library of every woman recovering from any kind of abuse. I even think it should be given out by therapists and domestic violence shelters!

The value in the valley, November 24, 1999

This book knocked me for six. An extraordinary and powerful piece. Definately not for the faint hearted. I had to keep putting it down to cry my eyes out. It exposes you completely and empowers you in a way that you can never imagine. I found that i had to keep putting it down several times before i could finish. I described the “value in the valley” to one of my friends as a knock out in the ring. I am not just recommending this to every single female but also male readers. It’s helped guide me through a difficult period. I was able to make a very confusing, difficult and the most important decision my life look so easy.Iyanla, when would you be coming to London?

So Good I Had To Read It Three Times, August 5, 2000
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I was first turned onto this book when I raided my sister’s bookshelf. She is just as avid a reader as me and I go over her house to get reading material whenever I have run through all of my own. Now I own a copy of this book myself. I just had to have it. No book has come closer to evaluating my real life. If the things in one chapter didn’t happen to me, then they have certainly happened to someone I know. I think this book should be required reading for all women, no matter what their age or race. It helps put a method to the madness of our daily lives and the things we endure in relationships.
