Time to Redefine “sport” or “athlete”?
Question by Duke O: Time to redefine “sport” or “athlete”?
I for one am tired of poker, pool and jump rope being called a sport. Tired of golfers, drivers, and baseball players being called athletes.
Clearly a travesty has been committed if one is comparing the skills and prowess of the likes of Lebron James to John Daly.
Since the players of “sports” are so often referred to as athletes I move to change the meaning of “sport” thereby demoting several activities from “sports” to “games”
What guidelines can we come up with to insure that those who play true sports are indeed at the peak of their physical performance, in great shape and posses remarkable skills? True “athletes.” What can we do to make this statement true, “Only athletes play sports.”
I propose that in order to be classified as “sport” all of these qualities must be met.
Desperate- Need Help- Serious Breathing Problem and More?
Question by : desperate- need help- serious breathing problem and more?
Hi, I need some serious advice. I’d really appreciate it!! Anyway, I have some serious problems, and the majority of my concern is a breathing / pulmanary problem. This started last year (but at the time it wasn’t so severe). Here is a detailed description of how it all started:
March 2011: I noticed I was getting out of breath singing. Sometimes when laughing I’d almost faint.
Later March 2011: I started having to yawn to get a deep , satisfying breath. I still feel this way. I feel like yes my body is getting oxygen, but it’s only because I have to force these labored breaths.
April 2011: Everyday in the humidity I felt like it was torture to breathe. I was intolerant to the heat. I’d have to sit in my car on my lunch break w/the AC on full blast and it still didn’t relieve it. Meanwhile, I’m still not able to sing right in April. And I’m a singer so it sucks.
July 2011: I did my last musical performance because singing was torture. I just couldn’t have enough breath to hold the notes out. My “talking” voice had not been affected by this time yet, though.
August 2011: This was the peak of the illness, when everything started spiriling down after. It was getting really hard to talk, as I’d run out of breath. i started having extreme heart palpatations, racing heart, heart always raced after eating, after standing up it jumped to 120 bpm sometimes higher, and then at 4 AM i’d get a hot flash with racing heart, almost every night. I thought I had POTS for a while, I don’t know.
In August the humidity was still bothering me and I still couldn’t take that satisfying breath. I started hyperventilating about once a week with light exertion. I was out of breath with any exertion. I was almost bedridden 24/7. I was fainting from laughing. I’d also faint frmo talking too much (maybe vagus nerve problem?). My chest got to be so tight that I could barely stand up or walk. So thus I was losing muscle making it even harder to walk.
September 2011- PRESENT:
**still sensitive to heat and can’t breathe in cold
- diagnosed with asthma but idk if this explains all my symptoms or maybe the asthma came from something else
-hot flash/ sweat if temperature is over 71*,
-racing heart with VERY light exertion
- can barely do ANYTHING
-can’t walk more than 10 feet…
-out of breath with very light exertion, even talking one word i’m out of breath
- discomfort in torso and airways
-diaphragm is so tight
- whole chest is so tight
- throat occassionally tight
- throat closes up on me when walking or in exertion
- LUMP in throat, / glubus hystericus mostly just in cold
-always out of breath, but the more i do , the worse it gets
-heavy, labored breathing
-sometimes fast, shallow “panting” breathing
-can’t catch breath after using bathroom
-off and on sore airways
- wheezing / breath sound every time I move torso … weird breath sound coming from my chest… it makes me feel weird afterwards, very dizzy and lightheaded when i move torso
-CAN’T TALK!!!!
HEART RACES AFTER EATING CERTAIN FOODS
– PEOPLE HAVE SUGGESTED ANXIETY BUT HOW DOES THAT EXPLAIN THAT WEIRD NOSE AND THE HUMIDITY THING, AND HOW IT STARTED IN MARCH … WHAT COULD THIS BE????? I’M GUESSING SOMETHING TO DO W/MY LUNGS OR DIAPHRAGM… HIATAL HERNIA???? DOCTORS ARE NOT TAKING ME SERIOUSLY AND ONE EVEN SAID I HAVE SOMATIZATION… BUT LOOK AT THE FACTS AS TO HOW THIS ALL HAPPENED.
